Concept

VO2 max

The maximum rate at which a person's body can use oxygen during intense exercise, used as a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness.

VO2 max is the highest rate at which the body can take in and use oxygen during hard exercise, usually measured in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. It is a widely used index of cardiorespiratory fitness, measured directly with a mask-and-treadmill test. Clinics report it as a fitness benchmark; interpretation belongs with a clinician.
