Treatmentexperimental

Chelation Therapy (IV)

Intravenous infusion of a chelating agent (most commonly EDTA) that binds metals for excretion, marketed at wellness clinics for heavy-metal 'detox', cardiovascular health, and anti-aging beyond its approved poisoning indication.

Evidence

experimental

EDTA is only established for acute heavy-metal poisoning; the cardiovascular TACT trial showed marginal, contested results and there is no credible evidence for the anti-aging/longevity 'detox' use, which also carries real harm risk.

Regulatory notes

European Union
EDTA chelation is a prescription medical treatment approved only for heavy-metal poisoning in the EU/Spain; use for cardiovascular or anti-aging 'detox' is off-label/unapproved and marketing is restricted.
United States
FDA-approved chelation products are prescription-only and indicated for lead/metal poisoning; the FDA has warned against unapproved OTC and off-label chelation for cardiovascular disease, autism, and anti-aging.
United Arab Emirates
Restricted to DHA/DoH-licensed physicians and approved poisoning indications; off-label wellness chelation is regulatory-sensitive and claims are prohibited.
United Kingdom
Prescription-only and approved only for metal toxicity; off-label 'detox' or cardiovascular use is unapproved and subject to prescriber and claim restrictions.
