Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

Physician-supervised administration of testosterone (injections, gels, pellets, or creams) to raise serum testosterone in men with diagnosed hypogonadism.

Physician-supervised administration of testosterone (injections, gels, pellets, or creams) to raise serum testosterone in men with diagnosed hypogonadism. Marketed by clinics for improved energy, libido, muscle mass, mood, and anti-aging vitality.

Evidence

established

TRT has strong RCT evidence for correcting symptomatic, biochemically confirmed hypogonadism, but the broader longevity/anti-aging claim in eugonadal men is not supported and carries cardiovascular and prostate monitoring concerns.

Regulatory notes

European Union
Prescription-only (POM); approved for diagnosed male hypogonadism under EMA/national authorities, with Spain requiring a medical prescription and specialist oversight.
United States
Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance and prescription-only; FDA-approved only for classical hypogonadism, and off-label age-related low-T use is explicitly cautioned against by the FDA.
United Arab Emirates
Prescription-only and controlled; TRT must be delivered under a DHA/DoH-licensed physician and licensed facility, with testosterone tightly regulated by MoHAP.
United Kingdom
Prescription-only; approved for diagnosed hypogonadism and available via NHS and private clinics under specialist oversight.
