Concept

Senescence (senescent cells)

A state in which cells stop dividing but do not die, accumulating with age and linked to tissue ageing.

Cellular senescence is a state where cells permanently stop dividing yet remain metabolically active and resist death. So-called senescent cells accumulate with age and are a major topic in ageing research, including work on senolytics that aim to clear them. It is a research concept, not an approved treatment target in clinics.
