Neurofeedback

EEG-based brain training in which clients watch or hear real-time feedback of their brainwaves to 'train' focus, calm, sleep or peak performance.

EEG-based brain training in which clients watch or hear real-time feedback of their brainwaves to 'train' focus, calm, sleep or peak performance. Sold as single sessions or 10-40 session packages, often preceded by a qEEG 'brain map'.

Evidence

experimental

Blinded sham-controlled trials repeatedly show effects comparable to placebo for the cognitive-enhancement and peak-performance claims marketed by studios, so the wellness claim remains unproven despite decades of research in clinical populations.

Regulatory notes

European Union
No harmonized practitioner regulation; devices making medical claims fall under EU MDR, and treatment of clinical conditions (ADHD, anxiety) is reserved to licensed health professionals in Spain.
United States
EEG biofeedback hardware is FDA-cleared as Class II relaxation/biofeedback equipment, but no device is approved for cognitive enhancement, and practitioner titles are largely unregulated.
United Arab Emirates
Clinical neurofeedback for diagnosed conditions requires a DHA/DoH-licensed psychology or medical facility; wellness-only offerings operate under general commercial licenses.
United Kingdom
Unregulated as a wellness service; clinical claims would bring devices and practitioners under MHRA/CQC oversight.
