Actigraphy & Wearable Sleep Assessment

One-to-two-week objective monitoring of sleep-wake patterns using a wrist-worn actigraph (or validated wearable) with clinician review, used to assess insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders and to baseline sleep before interventions.

Evidence

established

AASM clinical practice guidance endorses actigraphy as a validated adjunct for estimating sleep-wake patterns in insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders, though it is less accurate than PSG and consumer wearables vary widely in validation.

Regulatory notes

European Union
Clinical actigraphs are CE-marked medical devices; consumer trackers are not medical devices and cannot be marketed with diagnostic claims.
United States
Clinical actigraphs are FDA Class II devices with a billable CPT code when physician-ordered; consumer wearables marketed for wellness fall outside FDA clearance.
United Arab Emirates
Clinical interpretation must occur within DHA/DoH-licensed facilities; consumer-wearable reviews are treated as wellness services.
United Kingdom
Clinical actigraphy via registered providers; consumer wearables unregulated for wellness use.
